An estimated nine million homes in the United States have their home water served by legacy lead pipes but relief is coming. In October, the EPA announced the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements for drinking water systems across the country. This final rule requires the replacement of lead pipes nationwide within 10 years, plus more thorough testing. If you are concerned about lead in your home water, don’t wait for government help — an EcoWater Pro can test your water for free and recommend treatment.

Why Lead Pipes Are a Concern and What’s Being Done About It

Lead is a neurotoxin that’s proven to be particularly dangerous for children, harming their physical and mental development and it has even been linked to causing brain damage. In adults, lead exposure can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, decreased kidney function and certain types of cancer.

  • The EPA’s final rule is estimated to help:
  • Protect up to 900,000 infants from having low birthweight
  • Prevent the loss of 200,000 total IQ points among children
  • Block up to 2,600 children from having Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Prevent up to 1,500 premature deaths caused by heart disease

To remove lead pipes, the federal government and communities across the country are taking action. Progress to date includes:

  • Grant funding disbursement to municipalities that apply and get approval
  • Milwaukee is replacing all its lead pipes, backed by federal funding
  • Denver has received government funds to change its lead pipes
  • Detroit replaced more than 8,000 lead service lines in 2024 and will change its remaining lead pipes by the deadline
  • Erie, Pennsylvania is on track to replace all its lead pipes within five years
